Self-represented individuals often request a continuance to hire counsel; however, even after the continuance they are still unable to retain counsel.
17th JDC
Lack of funding to implement additional enhancements.
East Baton Rouge Family Court
Suggestions: Uniform data collection and count of self-represented litigants (SRLs); method to count all SRLs in court, not just the ones who file the initial pleading (many respond by court appearance only); need the ability to capture number of outcomes (judgments, orders, etc.) as a good measure of performance; and Clerk of Court cooperation to reboot aiSmartBench Case management system with the clerk's new system. This was a major help to our court and court staff when it was available to us.
