Additional actions taken by the courts to address this objective
16th JDC | The court maintained a system in which defendants in child support cases may request petitions for custody or visitation. Petitions and pauper forms were provided to defendants during court hearings. Defendants were given detailed instructions regarding completion of the forms. The completion and filing of these forms allowed individuals to have a Hearing Officer Conference to try to develop a Joint Custody Implementation Plan or Visitation Plan, and if necessary, a court hearing on the issue.
St. Martin Parish Family Court Program regularly provided forms to self-represented litigants and referred persons needing assistance to the Lafayette Parish Bar Self-Help kiosk. Plaintiffs in protective order cases were referred to New Start and SNAP programs which provide assistance to domestic violence victims. Referrals were also made to the District Attorney's Office for child support services and to Acadiana Legal Services for low-income parties.
The St. Mary Parish Family Court program provided, on its website, forms to self-represented litigants for requests for modifications of child support to those whose cases are in child support court. The court also provided forms for issues involving custody so that individuals who cannot afford attorneys can get custody issues before the court.
