GOAL 1: TO ESTABLISH A MORE OPEN AND ACCESSIBLE SYSTEM OF JUSTICE.


Objective

1.2 To encourage responsible parties to make court facilities safe, accessible, and convenient.

Intent of the Objective

This objective addresses three distinct but related aspects of court performance: the security of persons and property within the courthouse and its facilities, access to the courthouse and its facilities, and the reasonable convenience and accommodation of the general public in court facilities. In Louisiana, local governments are generally responsible for providing suitable courtrooms, offices, juror facilities, furniture, and equipment and for providing the necessary heat and lighting in these buildings. They are also responsible for the safety and accessibility of court facilities. The intent of Objective 1.2 is to encourage courts and judges to work with others to make court facilities safe, accessible, and convenient.

BAKER CITY COURT
Baker City Court employed interpreters for those with limited English proficiency.
BATON ROUGE CITY COURT
The court website contained information and forms for requesting accommodations and for submitting complaints.
CROWLEY CITY COURT
Handicap access to Crowley City Court, which is located on the second floor, was available via a ramp through the Police Department on the first floor of the court building. Also, there was elevator access from the first floor to the courtroom on the second floor.
JEFFERSON PARISH 1ST PARISH COURT
In 2015, First Parish Court participated in an employment exploration program which teaches disabled high school students to work in an office environment. This is a community-based program whereby a job training specialist accompanies the students to oversee their development. All court notices contain verbiage informing the disabled whom to contact for assistance. The Court uses the Deaf Action Center to provide sign language interpreters, and court staff is trained each year on use of TDD Machines.
JEFFERSON PARISH 2ND PARISH COURT
Court notices included information to guide anyone in need of the court's services for individuals with a disability.
NEW ORLEANS 1ST CITY COURT
The Civil District Court Judicial Administrator continued to be tasked with ADA compliance.
NEW ORLEANS MUNICIPAL COURT
Municipal Court participated in the October 2008 Law Enforcement District Proposition which will bring 7.5 million dollars in capital improvements to the Municipal and Traffic Court Building. Municipal Court currently has 2 courtrooms; one of the two is ADA-compliant, with proper wheel chair accessibility.The improvements will make the entire building ADA-compliant. The renovations are slated to begin in 2017.
