GOAL 1: TO ESTABLISH A MORE OPEN AND ACCESSIBLE SYSTEM OF JUSTICE


Objective

1.1 To conduct judicial proceedings that are public by law or custom openly

Intent of the Objective

The intent of this objective is to encourage openness in all appropriate judicial proceedings. The courts should specify proceedings to which the public is denied access and ensure that the restriction is in accordance with the law and not contrary to reasonable public expectations. Further, courts should ensure that proceedings are accessible and audible to all participants, including litigants, attorneys, court personnel, and other persons in the courtroom.

Additional actions taken by the courts to address this objective
BATON ROUGE CITY COURT
The court conducted tours of the courthouse for students and civic groups, including the Junior Assistant District Attorneys, and provided the use of courtrooms for various activities such as Mock Trials by local law schools. The court also conducted Law Day activities to help publicize the court's purpose and operations.
CROWLEY CITY COURT
The annual court calendar for the City Court of Crowley was distributed to Crowley City Hall, the Crowley Police Department, the Marshal's Office, the Crowley Police Department website, the Acadia Parish Sheriff's office, the District Attorney's office, the Public Defender's office and the local newspapers.
JEANERETTE CITY COURT
The court used electronic signage to assist court users.
JEFFERSON PARISH 1ST PARISH COURT
Signs were posted on the outside doors of the courthouse prior to court closures. Holiday information and after-hour messages were recorded on the phone numbers listed on traffic tickets.
JEFFERSON PARISH 2ND PARISH COURT
Employees were stationed in the court's main lobby during peak hours to provide additional information and directions to the public.
KAPLAN CITY COURT
The court used the newspaper to inform people of outstanding warrants.
LAFAYETTE CITY COURT
The court website went through the final stages of testing.
MONROE CITY COURT
The court began the process of re-constructing the court website.
NEW IBERIA CITY COURT
The court published and distributed court calendars.
NEW ORLEANS MUNICIPAL AND TRAFFIC COURT
The court published the court budget in local newspaper. The court also held court sessions in the community, giving defendants the opportunity to address outstanding issues involving municipal and traffic offenses. The court also posted the holiday schedule, court hours, directions, and other information on web page.
SPRINGHILL CITY COURT
The court published the docket and case dispositions in the local paper.
VIDALIA CITY COURT
The court informed defendants of court hours on a call-in basis.
