Objective

4.4 To inform the community of the court’s structure, function, and programs.

Intent of the Objective

Most citizens do not have direct contact with the courts. Information about courts is obtained through the media, lawyers, litigants, jurors, political leaders, and others. This objective suggests that courts have a direct responsibility to inform the community of their structure, functions, and programs. The sharing of such information increases public awareness of and confidence in the operations of the courts.

BASTROP CITY COURT
Bastrop City Court reported that several classes came to the court to view courtroom procedures.
BATON ROUGE CITY COURT
The court participated in and hosted Law Day activities, where students from local schools attend presentations and participate in mock trial activities. The court also conducted tours for students from local schools. The court maintained a website with information about the court system and various divisions and programs of the court.
CROWLEY CITY COURT
The Crowley City Court judge, with participation from the local bar association, directed a mock trial for the Acadia-Jeff Davis Leadership Excel Program. The mock trial gave the Excel participants a chance to participate in a civil "trial" and jury service. The mock trial was very well-received and covered by the local newspaper.
JEFFERSON PARISH 1ST PARISH COURT
Both First Parish Court judges continued to participate and/or arrange mock trials for local area high schools. Also, the court worked with local high schools and colleges to accommodate students seeking intern programs. The intern programs engaged local students by providing hands-on training and insight into the judicial system as it relates to criminal, misdemeanor, and traffic offenses.
JEFFERSON PARISH 2ND PARISH COURT
One of the court's judges presented a "Driving is a Privilege" informational session to local teenagers. Also, several interns spent time in the courtroom with one of the court's judges for teaching/training purposes.
KAPLAN CITY COURT
The Kaplan City Court judge spoke to the Rotary Club and during two city council meetings.
LAFAYETTE CITY COURT
The court worked to complete the website, which will allow members of the bar and the public access to court schedules and records as appropriate. The court has ensured that Teen Court can use the courthouse facilities when court is not in session.
NEW ORLEANS MUNICIPAL COURT
New Orleans Municipal Court, with the assistance of the City of New Orleans IT department, maintained a webpage on the City of New Orleans website.
WEST MONROE CITY COURT
West Monroe City Court reported that it participated in mock trials.
