Objective

4.4 To inform the community of the court’s structure, function, and programs

Intent of the Objective

Most citizens do not have direct contact with the courts. Information about courts is obtained through the media, lawyers, litigants, jurors, political leaders, and others. This objective suggests that courts have a direct responsibility to inform the community of their structure, functions, and programs. The sharing of such information increases public awareness of and confidence in the operations of the courts.

CROWLEY CITY COURT
The court regularly participated in school tours and instructed the visiting students on various aspects of the court system.
JEFFERSON PARISH 1ST PARISH COURT
The court participated in Sudden Impact Mock Trial with University Medical Center of Louisiana. Also, middle school students used the courtroom at First Parish Court for trials.
JEFFERSON PARISH 2ND PARISH COURT
The court began planning for high school students to attend and observe court proceedings.
KAPLAN CITY COURT
The court published criminal court minutes regarding outstanding warrants in the local paper.
LAFAYETTE CITY COURT
The court continued work on the court website, which will allow members of the bar and the public to access court schedules and records as appropriate. The Teen Court had access to the courtrooms when court was not in session. Also, the court provided free WiFi to attorneys and their staff, as well as other court users as appropriate.
LAKE CHARLES CITY COURT
The court worked with the local district attorney, area law enforcement, and Southwest Legal Aid to sponsor a streamlined version of expungements called Fresh Start. It offers a one-stop process for expungements at a reduced cost over a three-month period.
NEW ORLEANS 2ND CITY COURT
The court employed summer interns funded personally by the judge.
